Why whole-field averages lie

Every field we map behaves like several fields wearing one name. The draws, the mid-slope and the hilltops each have their own moisture pattern, their own organic matter, and their own response to whatever you applied.

When you average them, a strong response on two thirds of the field and a loss on the other third look identical to no response at all. That is how genuinely profitable practices get abandoned, and how flat rates survive longer than they should.

The practical test is simple. Resolve the yield to cells, overlay the as-applied map, and look at whether the response is distributed evenly or concentrated. If it is concentrated, the answer is not a different flat rate — it is a prescription.

None of this requires new equipment. It requires the monitor to be calibrated and the as-applied data to actually be exported at the end of the season.
